I launched my first business (PM Financial Services) on my birthday…March 19, 1981. Yes…35 years ago!
It was a part-time home-based enterprise from my desk in a modest apartment in Hoboken, NJ. from there, I went on to more milestones on my career path as a home-based entrepreneur.
Two years later I did my first live seminar entitled “The Small Investor Seminar” on the campus of Monmouth college in central NJ. That seminar was re-titled as “The $50 Wealth-Builder” and it is still going strong over three decades later (thank you!).
In 1985, I gained my Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. At that time, it was a relatively obscure designation. 2015 was my 30th anniversary of being a CFP (I am grateful).
Because my specialty was investing and my target market was low and middle-income folks, I frequently heard them say “but I don’t have a lot of money to invest”. My response was typically “look…if you don’t have money to invest…then why not start a part-time business to make money…and then use it for investing?”.
With that I launched my second seminar in 1986 called “How to Started a Part-time Home Business”. That seminar was re-titled to “Home Business Goldmine” and it is still going strong (30 years as of this year).
Eventually I have branded myself as “The Raving Capitalist” and my philosophy is that everyone should be doing a two-pronged approach to wealth-building; passive and active.
Passive wealth-building means that you have your money work for you with vehicles such as stocks, options, mutual funds utilizing appropriate investing & speculating strategies.
Active wealth-building means that you use your knowledge & efforts in your spare time (a home business) to build wealth. I also point out to my students that you should be diversified in your active wealth-building too (besides just your investment portfolio).
Most people have a job or a pension…this means that you are dependent on that one job or one pension. In 2016, the economy and financial markets are loaded with land mines and your single source of income will make you vulnerable. This is why I think that a part-time home business is a vital part of your financial security.
